HMGB1是一種核蛋白，其由壞死細胞被動釋放，由凋亡細胞保留，并由炎癥細胞主動分泌（Dumitriu等人，HMGB1:從內(nèi)部引導(dǎo)免疫。Trends Immunol 2005，26:381-7）。HMGB1對生命至關(guān)重要：HMGB1基因敲除小鼠出生后不久死亡。
HMGB1作為運動細胞的化學(xué)引誘劑和細胞因子的誘導(dǎo)劑的兩種不同活性被歸因于不同的生物化學(xué)形式。還原的HMGB1（具有化學(xué)引誘活性的形式）被還原；二硫化物HMGB1包含C23和C45之間的二硫鍵（完整注釋：HMGB1C23-C45C106h–Antoine J.等人（2014）。Mol-Med）。
二硫化物HMGB1可誘導(dǎo)單核細胞和其他炎癥細胞產(chǎn)生細胞因子和趨化因子（Venereau等人，2012）。
在結(jié)構(gòu)上，二硫化物HMGB1在半胱氨酸殘基23和45與還原的半胱氨酸殘基106之間具有二硫鍵。測試二硫化物HMGB1刺激細胞因子的能力
